NewsEventsSafetyWeek2013In November Children at both nurseries were involved in activities to promote road safety awareness. Activities included Making a giant hand print poster to display, to remind them of the importance of holding hands when walking out and about.

Chalking roads and crossings in the garden to help them understand about road safety, including crossing the road, being a passenger in a car and wearing your seat belt and safety equipment to be seen and safe such as reflectors, hi-vis jackets and cycle helmets.

Singing songs about road safety and taking local trips and outings to practice using their keeping safe skills.

As a part this week long campaign we were lucky enough to have had funds donated to the nursery by Farnham Funeral Services. This has enabled us to provide each child with a hi-visibility snap band, which they can then wear on their arm when out and about to help them be more visible to road user. 12th January and 2nd February 2013: Parents First Aid Workshops

At Tootsies Nursery we give high precedence to our staff training, skills and continual professional development; we work hard to ensure that all our staff have suitable paediatric first aid training and are confident in what to do should a first aid emergency arise. This is something we wanted to extend to our parents, offering them the opportunity to gain some of this valuable knowledge and skills.

Together with our local St John Ambulance team we facilitated a workshop in first aid and lifesaving skills such as resuscitation for babies, children and adults and how to deal with a choking incident.
As a part of reaching out to the community St John Ambulance offered this at no cost to the parents or nursery, Tootsies arranged for childcare teams to be available on the day to enable parents the time to come and take part in the workshop.
The day was a great success with over 50 people, including some grandparents attending. Another course is booked for early February which is already under great demand, with further dates to be confirmed.

Feedback has been positive about the initiative; parents said they now felt confident with how to deal with an emergency situation should the need ever arise. It has also given Tootsies the opportunity to work with another great local resource in our community, St John Ambulance.
